So what is the answer? As a young boy, I thought that maybe the moon wasn't round- maybe the moon was flat. This seemed like the only reasonable answer for such an amazing oddity. I reasoned that, " if the moon was flat, that would surely explain why I kept seeing that same 'face'! This amusing answer may have been acceptable as a child, but as any adult, I wanted to know exactly were that real truth was hidden!
My search eventually allowed me to discover that the real truth was hidden in an exciting and profound display of awesome engineering- Here's how it works:
The earth and moon each spin at two totally different speeds which should obviously bring various areas of the moon's surface into view. However, when you combine these two different 'spinning speeds' with the precise distance between the earth and moon and also consider the exact amount of time it takes for the moon to travel one full circle around the earth, you then end up with the ingredients for an incredible heavenly masterpiece!
If any part of this highly complex formula was slightly off, even by just a hair, this beautiful equation would not work!
But this extremely delicate equation does work because all the ingredients have been perfectly balanced and fine tuned to the smallest of details! So no matter where we stand on earth, the flawless design and perfect interaction of this extraordinary formula are why we constantly see only one area of the moon at all times- even though it spins!
